Solid-State Battery Will Take Time to Realize Commercialization

In recent years, the continuous innovation in the downstream application field has put forward higher and higher requirements for the lithium battery industry. As a result, the lithium battery technology has made continuous progress towards higher energy density and safety. From the perspective of the development path of lithium battery technology, the energy density that liquid lithium battery can achieve has gradually approached its limit. So people think solid-state battery will be the only way to develop lithium battery.

The theoretical research of solid electrolyte lithium-ion battery can be traced back to the NATO "Fast Ion Transport in Solid" Conference held in Belgium (Italy) in 1972. At present, the competition in solid-state battery market is mainly concentrated 

in Japan, South Korea, Europe, America, China and other regions.

Fuji Keizai, a Japanese market research firm, expects that the global market size of all solid-state lithium batteries (all solid-state batteries; including sulfide, oxide, polymer, etc.) will expand to 2 trillion 677.2 billion yen in 2035, which is 1114 times more than 2.4 billion yen in 2018.





    





             

In South Korea,as early as November 2018, 

LG Chem, Samsung SDI and SKI,

 the three major battery companies in South Korea, 

formed an alliance to jointly develop 

the next generation battery core technology, 

including solid-state batteries.



In Europe and the United States,Solid Power, a battery maker supported by Ford, cooperated with Ford Motor Company in April last year and began to develop all solid-state batteries for the next generation of EVs. In October 2020, the first generation of all solid-state battery (ASSB) prototype product has been produced. Solid Power said that it would start testing solid-state batteries for automobile production in early 2022.


    




           

Domestic enterprises in China,including CATL, GOTION HIGH-TECH, Ganfeng Lithium, Tianqi Lithium and other lithium battery enterprises, as well as BYD, Nio, Great Wall Motor, BAIC Motor and other auto enterprises, have participated in the research of solid-state batteries.




               


               


                


               
               


               




               




               





It will take time to realize commercialization

Solid-state batteries have incomparable advantages over traditional batteries in terms of energy density and quality. Even after ues of more than 30 years, batteries can still maintain more than 90% of their initial performance, which is very desirable. According to the prediction of relevant institutions, the global demand for solid-state lithium batteries is expected to reach 1.7GWh, 44.2GWh and 494.9GWh in 2020, 2025 and 2030. The global solid-state battery market is expected to reach more than $20 billion in 2030.

However, solid-state batteries do not have the conditions for large-scale industrialization at present, and it will take a long time to achieve industrialization. After all, power batteries have higher requirements for consistency, cycle life and safety compared with ordinary consumer batteries after loading. Only when these problems are solved can industrialization be discussed.

Although many manufacturers have high expectations for solid-state batteries, Toyota also proposed commercial application in 2022. However, industry insiders believe that the process route of solid-state battery is not yet mature and cost reduction is still a long process. And it is estimated that industrialization will be fully realized in 2025.
